Wolfgang Heuwinkel had a key experience on Lanzarote in the beginning of the eighties, when he was still painting impressionistic watercolours, i. e. formulating landscape impressions.
Facing this pristine landscape, particularly its active volcanic energy within the grounds, he had the feeling that he could not represent this landscape with the classic means of drawing and painting.
It was an act of desperation – as it often is in the world of art – to get closer to the genuine truth of this landscape: He tore the foundation of his watercolours – i. e. the paper – he rumpled it and received through this gesture an appropriate method, not only of showing, but of grasping the sense of this landscape. …
Starting from this experience Wolfgang Heuwinkel began to deal with paper as a material, not only to use it as before, but to emancipate it and explore its aesthetic qualities.
